Drogheda Arts Festival in partnership with thirty three – 45 are delighted to announce an exclusive DJ set from Mike Joyce, former drummer of Manchester legends The Smiths.

Alongside Andy Rourke, Johnny Marr and Morrissey, Rourke and The Smiths became one of Britain’s most acclaimed and controversial bands. Renowned for such classic tunes as Panic, The Boy with the Thorn in his Side and There is a light that never goes out plus classic albums such as The Queen is Dead and Strangeways Here We Come, the band produced a near perfect discography during their brief and colourful 5-year life span. After the band’s demise in 1987, Mike went on to play with Sinéad O’Connor, Julian Cope, Suede and punk legends The Buzzcocks and PIL amongst others. Since 2006, Mike has been in demand as a DJ in both clubs and on radio.

“The DJing thing is meant to be a party. I play songs that I like. Because I’m not a punk DJ, or a house DJ, or a rock DJ, I play things from all over. When I first started DJing, I didn’t play any Smiths… I felt a bit embarrassed playing a song that I featured on. Then at about the third gig a girl asked if I could play some Smiths; I asked what she’d like, and she asked for This Charming Man. I played it and loads of people really enjoyed it – I was a bit embarrassed, I won’t deny that. Then a guy came up and said ‘what a w*nker, fancy playing your stuff!”
