DROGHEDA ARTS FESTIVAL COMMISSION 2019

The Belfast Ensemble

Tracing one man’s journey through a city in crisis, Ten Plagues charts the great plague of 1665, including its entering the island through the port of Drogheda.
Part torch song, part Schubert, this ground-breaking piece of music-theatre written by composer Conor Mitchell and playwright Mark Ravenhill includes a striking visual experience created specifically for the Drogheda Arts Festival by artists Els Borghart and Declan Kelly.
A polemical work using the Great Plague to talk about the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

Founded in 2016, The Belfast Ensemble is an evolving collective of UK/Irish musicians, actors and visual artists. Putting music and visual arts at the centre of their work, they explore new ways to experience performance, both for their assembled artists and their audience.

Members of The Belfast Ensemble, Drogheda artists Els Borghart and Declan Kelly have worked as an independent artistic and curatorial duo in a local, national and international context since 2009. They initiate, develop and collaborate on contemporary projects, either independently or in association with other creatives. Their starting point is always to advocate visual arts they believe to be critically relevant to our times, while looking at each project from both a curatorial and an artistic point of view.
