Boyne Valley Treasure Trail: Old Mellifont Abbey

Note: Access to site is by stone stairway, therefore not fully accessible.

Saturday 30 April | 2.00pm | Meet at Highlanes Gallery, Laurence St.

TICKETS: €12 (€6 for children) (includes bus)

Archaeologist and author, Dr Geraldine Stout, leads a tour of Old Mellifont Abbey, An Mhainistir Mhór (the big abbey) the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland, founded in 1142 by St Malachy of Armagh. The abbey became the model for other Cistercian abbeys in Ireland with its formal style of architecture influenced by the abbeys of the same order in France. Little of the original Abbey remains, save a 13th-century Lavabo, common in many early and medieval monasteries; and some Romanesque arches and a 14th-century chapter house. This tour will also consider the daily life of how the monks ate and worked and the legacy of their great farming community at Mellifont. The tour will end with a short performance by traditional and folk singer, Irene Nelson.
