Archaeologist and author, Dr Geraldine Stout, leads a tour of Old Mellifont Abbey, An Mhainistir Mhór (the big abbey) the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland, founded in 1142 by St Malachy of Armagh. The abbey became the model for other Cistercian abbeys in Ireland with its formal style of architecture influenced by the abbeys of the same order in France.
