Quintessence Theatre return to the live stage with an original dark drama exploring the shadow pandemics of Ireland’s lockdown: domestic violence and parental alienation.

Lockdown. Locked up. Locked in. No way out. No way in…

Quintessence Theatre in association with Droichead Arts Centre, An Táin Arts Centre and Drogheda Arts Festival, proudly present, Behind Locked Doors.

Behind Locked Doors first premiered as a short digital mini-series in Drogheda Arts Festival 2021. The live stage production will have its world premiere at Droichead Arts Centre as part of Drogheda Arts Festival 2022.

Based on true stories from lockdown 2020, Quintessence introduces you to two neighbours who find themselves unable to leave their homes in Drogheda due to national Covid restrictions. One just wants to feel safe in her own home. The other just wants to see his children.

Each performance will be followed by a post show discussion with the director, cast, and a representative from Women’s Aid and Treoir.

Audience Reactions from their mini-series as part of Drogheda Arts Festival 2021 programme.

The Company

Quintessence seeks to explore the human condition through the most theatrical means available to us: the actor themselves, and their imagination. We seek to surprise, move and provoke our audiences, entertaining them and creating dynamic, innovative, visceral and compassionate storytelling that touches on issues at the heart of Irish society here and now.

Some previous productions by Quintessence Theatre include: Cracks (Islandwide Tour 2018); Dracula (2017 & 2018 – Winner Broadway World’s BEST NEW PLAY 2018); The Star of Chester’s Lane (Commission of Drogheda Arts Festival 2018 & National Tour 2021) & The Curious Case of Albert Cashier: Lincoln’s Lady Soldier (March 2020).  Albert Cashier is the  remarkable true story of a Trans soldier (originally from Clogherhead, Co Louth) who fought in the American Civil War.  Quintessence hope to tour with this production at some point in the near future.

Drogheda Arts Festival welcomes the return of Quintessence to Droichead Arts Centre for this long anticipated live show; Behind Locked Doors.
